Ruby Madder

The Rubia genus — often known by the common name “madder” — contains dozens of species of herbaceous perennials. Their roots contain the compound alizarin, which is used to make red dye and paint pigment (“rubia” comes from the Latin word for red: “ruber”).

Madders are not poisonous.
